Dear Parents,
The IEP is a written statement of the educational plan for your child.
Each child who receives special education services must, by law, have
an IEP. You can help decide what will be included in your child's plan.
The plan must be reviewed at least once each year, but can be reviewed
more often if needed.
You and your child are a part of the IEP team. The other people on
the team could be the classroom teacher, psychologist, nurse, or anyone
responsible for your child's education.
During the meeting, the team members will review evaluation results
and the current IEP, if one exists. The team will discuss the areas
of your child's strengths and needs. Goals and objectives will be written
and it will be determined if any services will be needed and the duration
of services; for example, transportation to and from school or physical
therapy.
The team will decide where would be the least restrictive setting in
which to deliver the services and ensure that your child participates
to the maximum extent appropriate. Any accommodations or modifications
will be included in your child's plan, such as more time to work on
assignments or the use of a calculator.
The need for an extended year will be considered and it will be determined
when you will receive progress reports. You will also receive a copy
of the IEP.
